What are business rates?

Business rates, sometimes called non-domestic rates, are tax based on the value of your business property.
These rates are set by the government and collected by local councils. The income is then paid into a national 'central pool'.

The government redistributes this income to the billing authorities and other statutory service providers, such as the Greater London Authority and the Metropolitan Police.

This is how local businesses contribute to the cost of local services.
