Payment of Local Housing Allowance

You can find information on Local Housing Allowance rates, and payment methods on this page.

How much is the Local Housing Allowance?

You can work out your Local Housing Allowance using information from this website.

The published amount is your maximum benefit entitlement.

The amount of actual benefit you receive will still depend on the money you have coming in, any capital you have and who lives with you.

The published figures only cover households who need up to five bedrooms.

How will my benefit be paid?

In most cases LHA payments will be made directly to you and it will be your responsibility to pay your rent to your landlord.

If you are claiming benefit, we recommend that you have your benefit paid direct into your bank account as it is a quicker and secure method of payment.

If you do not already have a bank account you may need to open one.

Visit the Money Made Clear website for advice on opening a bank account.

If you are already having your benefit paid to your landlord, this will continue until you stop claiming or move home.

Payments to your landlord

In certain circumstances we can pay benefit directly to your landlord.

We will only do this if we are satisfied that a customer is not able to manage their own financial affairs.  This may be due to, for example, mental illness or severe learning difficulties.

In these circumstances the authority will require a written request and proof from the customer or their representative.

We can also consider past situations where we were required by law to pay direct to a landlord (for example, where a claimant had eight weeks or more of rent arrears).

See our safeguarding tenants and landlords policy (pdf 76k) for further details.
