Who can get Council tax benefit?
If you are on low income, you may be able to claim Council Tax Benefit. It doesn't matter whether you rent or own your home.
How much will I get?
Some people will get enough Council Tax Benefit to pay their whole Council Tax bill! The amount of help you get will depend on:
money you and your parter (if any) have coming in
your savings and your partner's savings
circumstances such as your age, ages and size of your family, any disabled members of the family, whether anyone who lives with you can help with living costs.
Some people - eg people who live alone, the disabled - qualify for Council Tax discounts. See the
How do I get money off my bill
? page in the Council Tax section for details.
If you have other adults living with you who are on a low income (but not your partner), you may be able to claim a
second adult rebate
.
Savings
Unless you are over 60 and receive Pension Credit Guarantee, savings of over £16,000 means that you cannot get Council Tax Benefit.
Savings of over £6,000 will affect how much benefit you will get.
