Who can get Council tax benefit?

If you are on low income, you may be able to claim Council Tax Benefit. It doesn't matter whether you rent or own your home.

How much will I get?

Some people will get enough Council Tax Benefit to pay their whole Council Tax bill! The amount of help you get will depend on:

  • money you and your parter (if any) have coming in
  • your savings and your partner's savings
  • circumstances such as your age, ages and size of your family, any disabled members of the family, whether anyone who lives with you can help with living costs.

Savings

You cannot get Council Tax Benefit if you have savings or investments of over £16,000, unless you are receiving Guarantee Pension Credit.

Savings of between £6,000 and £16,000 will affect how much benefit you will get.

Other discounts and rebates

Some people - eg people who live alone and the disabled - qualify for Council Tax discounts. In our Council Tax section, you can check whether you are eligible for:

If you have other adults living with you who are on a low income (but not your partner), you may be able to claim a second adult rebate.
