Extra help for families with children

November brings extra help for families on low incomes who pay rent or council tax.

New rules

From 2 November 2009, Child Benefit payments will no longer reduce the amount of Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit that parents get.

The changes mean that some families will get more help or may be able to get help towards their rent or council tax for the first time.

  • If you already get Housing Benefit or Council Tax Benefit you will get the extra help automatically so do not need to do anything.

  • If you don’t get any help, it is worth checking to see if you might be able to get Housing Benefit or Council Tax Benefit after 2 November.
