Working Tax Credit if you are sick or disabled

You may be able to claim Working Tax Credit if you or your partner work at least 16 hours per week and have a physical or mental disability which limits the work you can do.

Who can claim

You can claim if your income is low enough and:
  • you get a disability or incapacity benefit (like Disability Living Allowance, Attendance Allowance or Incapacity Benefit), or
  • you were getting a disability or incapacity benefit in the last six months.
Even if you cannot get WTC because of incapacity or disability, you may still be able to get it anyway if you are in low paid work. If you do not have dependent children, you usually need to be working for 30 hours or more a week.

WTC rates are higher for people with disability. You may also get Child Tax Credit if you have children under 20.

How to claim

Ring the Tax Credit Helpline on 0845 300 3900 (or 0845 300 3909 for textphone users).

See the Tax Credits section for general information.
