Statutory Sick Pay
If you are working and earn £90 or more a week, you can claim Statutory Sick Pay when you become ill.
You get £75.40 a week paid by your employer for up to 28 weeks.
Some employers have their own schemes and will pay money on top of this.
How to claim
Tell your employer when you are sick. A few people cannot get SSP - your employer must give you form SSP1 if this applies to you.
What if you're still sick after 28 weeks?
Claim
Incapacity Benefit
if you are still sick after your SSP stops. Your employer must give you a form SSP1 confirming that your SSP has ended.
You may also get some Income Support if your income is low enough.
Employment and Support Allowance
replaces Incapacity Benefit for new claimants from October 2008.
How to claim
Tell you employer when you are sick. Some people cannot get SSP - your employer must give you form SSP1 if this applies to you.
