Help with Council Tax and housing costs

Help with council tax and rent for people aged 65 or over has changed and some people will now get more. You may be able to get help now even if you could not get help previously.

The amount you get depends on how much money you have coming in, your age, health and the size of your family.

Council Tax Benefit and reductions

You may be able to get Council Tax Benefit if you have savings of £16,000 or less. But there is no savings limit for people getting Pension Credit Guarantee.

Even if you cannot get Council Tax Benefit, you can get your Council Tax bill reduced if:

  • you live alone
  • you live with students, carers or people with severe mental illnesses or disabilities (like Alzheimers)
  • your home has been adapted to meet the needs of a disabled person or has a room used by them.
You will not have to pay any Council Tax if:

  • everyone in your home has a severe mental illness
  • your home is empty for specific reasons.
See the Council Tax Benefit section for more information. Make sure you look at the How do I get money off my bill? pages too.

Housing costs

If you rent your home, you may be able to get Housing Benefit.  Your savings must be £16,000 or less. But there is no savings limit for people getting Pension Credit Guarantee.

See the Housing Benefit section for more information.

If you own your home, you may be able to get help with mortgage interest payments and some service charges as part of your Pension Credit Guarantee.
