Sure Start Maternity Grant

 
If you or your partner gets:

  • Income Support
  • income-based Jobseeker's Allowance
  • Pension Credit.
you may be able to claim a Sure Start Maternity Grant to help with the cost of a new baby. 

Some people on Tax Credits can also get this help - see below for more information. 

How much will I get?

The grant is a one-off payment of £500 for each baby.

How do I claim?

Ask for a claim form at your Jobcentre Plus office.

Claims can be made from 11 weeks before the baby is due up to three months after the birth. If you or your partner do not already get benefits or tax credits, you will need to wait until after the baby is born to claim.

IMPORTANT: Remember to claim within three months even if you are still waiting to hear about a first claim for benefits or tax credits. Get advice if you are refused the grant because your tax credits are too low - you may be able to reapply after your tax credits have changed.
