Help for carers with housing costs and council tax

You may be able to get help with rent and council tax.

How much you get depends on how much rent or council tax you pay, the size of your family and how much money you have coming in each week. Your savings must be £16,000 or less (unless you get Pension Credit Guarantee).

Help with housing costs

If you rent your home you may be able to get Housing Benefit.

If you own your home and get Income Support, Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance or Pension Credit Guarantee, you may be able to get help with mortgage interest payments and some service charges - get advice.

Help with council tax

If you pay Council Tax and have a low income, you may be able to get Council Tax Benefit. You can claim whether or not you are working.

Even if you cannot get Council Tax Benefit, you may be able to get your bill reduced.

For example, if you care for a disabled person and they are not your partner or dependent child, then you may be able to get Council Tax Benefit.

You can contact our Welfare Rights Service for advice on this.
