Tourism opportunities

London 2012 offers Greenwich a chance to build even further on our reputation as a high-quality destination for visitors.

There will be new attractions for tourists as well as local residents, and local businesses will stand to gain from the visitor boost.

New attractions

Between now and 2012, we can expect:

  • the new Samy Ofer wing to open at the National Maritime Museum

  • a Discover Greenwich centre, to help visitors get the most out of their stay

  • the re-opening of the refurbished Cutty Sark, due to be ready in 2010.

Benefits to local businesses

A key aim in Greenwich's strategy to develop visitor facilities is to create more opportunities for visitors to stay in Greenwich overnight.

The 2012 Games will serve as a huge spur to local businesses, such as bed-and-breakfast establishments (B&Bs) and hotels.

To help these businesses develop and expand in readiness for London 2012, the Council is offering guidance and advice.

Already, around 100 local people and businesses have attended Council-run workshops on how to set up B&Bs. More such workshops are planned.

We are also working to attract new hotel developments to Greenwich town centre.
