Call for further consultation on 2012 Olympic routes

9 February 2010

The Council is continuing to press the London 2012 organisers to ensure they consult with residents and businesses over their traffic plans for the Games.

The Government last week announced the full list of roads that may be used for the Olympic road network. There are 44 roads in Greenwich, including 14 in the area close to Greenwich Park.

Olympic organisers have stressed that designating a road does not mean that it will definitely be used for Olympic traffic. In particular they have stressed that no final decision has been made over the designation of roads that might be used for access to equestrian events in Greenwich Park. This is because the detailed design of the venue has not yet been revealed and will need to be subject to public consultation.

Road use categories

There will be four categories of road use:

  • core routes - the main roads linking athlete accommodation, the Olympic Park and other main venues
  • venue specific routes
  • alternative routes for contingency use in the event of other routes being disrupted
  • routes to enable athletes to travel to and from their training venues.
Go to the Department for Transport website for more information on designated Olympic roads.

Taking resident's views into account

The Council has welcomed the commitment by Olympic agencies to attend regular meetings chaired by the Leader of the Council, Chris Roberts, and including local stakeholders.

Councillor Roberts said: "It’s crucial that the Olympic agencies take into account the views of local residents and businesses - who are after all the ones who will be most affected - before finalising their transport plans.

"Local people should be reassured that the Council will not support any proposals that fail to reflect local concerns."
