Greenwich Young Ambassadors
Eight young people have been selected to spread the word about the London Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012 - and the importance of core Olympic values - to primary pupils across Greenwich.
This is the first group of Greenwich Young Ambassadors, cherry-picked as outstanding role models.
Meet the young ambassadors
The eight young ambassadors (school names in brackets) are:
Sam Carpanini (Crown Woods)
Nathan Cousins (Eltham Green)
Lucky Cullen (St Ursula’s)
Sam Douglas Freeman (John Roan)
Sabine Esiannayi (Kidbrooke)
Rosa Evans (John Roan)
Emmanuel Obasa (Crown Woods)
Sakar Pradhan (Kidbrooke)
The job
The young people will each have to put on an event during a school term. This could be a sporting event, a talk about the Olympic and Paralympic Games or any other idea they come up with.
At the young ambassadors' first project meeting, Greenwich Time spoke to Sabine Esiannayi, aged 16, who intends to organise a mini-heptathlon for primary shool children.
Sabine said, "Young children hear about the heptathlon but how many of them know exactly what it is? By holding an event they will not only enjoy taking part but also gain some knowledge."
She also said, "I’m really happy I’ve got this Ambassador's job. I like teaching younger children and to introduce them to sport. I would like to work in sport one day but I would also like to be a doctor, so maybe I can find a way of combining the two."
About the scheme
The scheme is run by Jane Simber, who manages the Greenwich School Sport Partnership from Eltham Green.
Jane said, "The project comes under the Youth Sports Trust and is happening all over the country up to 2012. We had 14 apply for the eight places and it was very difficult to choose.
"These young people have the skills and personality to do a wonderful job in the borough and we’re all very excited about it.
She added, "They’re such a lovely bunch of young people. I know it’s going to be great."
