To give our athletes a boost, the Council has started several programmes that will provide financial support as well as new and better facilities for young sportspeople.
Greenwich Starting Blocks
The brightest young sports performers will benefit from Greenwich Starting Blocks, the borough's unique bursary scheme.
The scheme provides funding to help our top athletes increase their chances at competing at the highest level - including at London 2012.

Support for swimmers
A new support structure for swimming means that there will be more opportunities for swimmers of all abilities to use pools in the borough.
Top-level competitive swimmers will also receive extra support in the run-up to 2012.
Top-class swim coaching
Sports Search
The borough is also piloting Sports Search, a national scheme for children aged 11 to 19, which matches pupils to a suitable sport using a web-based programme.
More opportunities for young people
Paralympic forum
We are also working to help create more opportunities in sport and physical activity for people with disabilities.
Greenwich held its first Paralympic forum in January 2008. The group is working with the London Sports Forum for Disabled People.
Cycle trail
'Ride the Games' is an eight-mile cycle trail developed by the Council that connects all three of the borough’s venues for sports in London 2012.

Sporting Club Greenwich
In 2005, we set up Sporting Club Greenwich, an umbrella group of local sports bodies to promote grassroots sports.
