The borough is gearing up for the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. In the years leading up to the 2012 Games, Greenwich is set to host many sporting events.

Major sporting events

Greenwich already hosts major sporting events, such as the annual London Marathon. Other major events that have taken place in the borough include:

  • the start of the 2007 Tour de France
  • the 2007 and 2008 Red Bull Air Race
  • the Sony Eriksson Run to the Beat in October 2008, London's first official mass-participation half-marathon event, which took runners past the borough's three 2012 Olympic and Paralympic venues.
The O2 will also be hosting the World Gymnastics Championships in October 2009.

These are exciting times!

The lead-up to the 2012 Games will be an exciting time for Greenwich, East and South East London. We intend to harness this excitement to engage and inspire young people.

By introducing wider access to activities for people of all ages and abilities, we aim to increase the number of people taking up sport. All the events will also be linked to programmes to support healthy living.

A boost for sport

Greenwich is supporting local athletes through a range of programmes, and promoting sports by making it more accessible to everyone.

Examples include Greenwich Starting Blocks, a bursary programme for talented young athletes, the Paralympic Forum, an and eight-lane competition pool and fitness centre in Eltham.
