Ready: Artist’s impression of a fencing match at the 2012 Olympics
The borough is gearing up for the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. In the years leading up to the 2012 Games, Greenwich is set to host many sporting events.
We already have ...
... the David Beckham Academy, premiership football at Charlton Athletic, and the annual London Marathon.
But there's even more ...
- Greenwich formed part of the Grand Depart route on the opening weekend of the 2007 Tour de France. Riders started from The Mall and finished in Canterbury, travelling about 11km through Greenwich on the way.
- In the summer of 2007, The O2 (formerly the Dome), opened as a 23,000 capacity world class entertainment and sporting arena.
- A fitness centre and new eight-lane competition pool were opened at the end of 2007 as part of Greenwich Council’s new Eltham centre. There are plans to modernise facilities on similar lines in Woolwich and Greenwich. More about Eltham Centre
- In 2008, Greenwich will host the World Gymnastics Championships at The O2.
- In October 2008 Greenwich will host London’s first official half-marathon event, starting and finishing at The O2 and taking runners on a route past three 2012 Olympic venues as they complete the course.
- Also in October 2008, Greenwich will host a six-day cycle race, heralding the return of this popular sport to the UK after a long absence.
- In addition, The O2 will bring many other sporting events to the borough.

These are exciting times!
The lead-up to the 2012 Games will be an exciting time for Greenwich, East and South East London. We intend to harness this excitement to engage and inspire young people.
By introducing wider access to activities for people of all ages and abilities, we aim to increase the number of people taking up sport. All the events will also be linked to programmes to support healthy living.
